The stability and accessibility of your project sites, no matter the circumstances, is critical to your work. If weather, terrain or soil quality are a challenge, you need solutions that will ensure your project succeeds. Horizon North’s innovative soil solutions emphasize safety, quality, schedule and budget in providing your sites with the reliable foundation required to complete your project.
Completed in our climate between May and October, soil stabilization is a process that changes the properties of soil to improve its strength and durability. Our soil stabilization mixture blends pulverized soil material and engineered measured amounts of chemical additive and water, compacted to high density. As the chemical additive hydrates, the mix becomes strong, durable and frost-resistant.
Before our team starts any work on your site, we take samples of the soil in that area to perform quality testing. Those tests identify the soil’s characteristics and point us to the appropriate solution for your project. Whatever the correct solution, our options all have the following advantages:
- Cost – You lower the maintenance costs associated with your project.
- Schedule – Expediting the drying of soils through chemical additives creates efficiencies.
- Permeability – The amount of fluid that can pass through the soil is reduced or eliminated entirely.
- Strength – The bearing capacity and shear strength of the soil is improved.
- Durability – The soil’s handling of freeze/thaw cycles is improved.
In addition to soil stabilization, we offer several other soil solutions that may be right for your project:
Aggregate Stabilization (Dust Control)
Our aggregate stabilization process, completed between May and October, rehabilitates and extends the life of an unpaved road segment by mixing the existing aggregate with liquid stabilization agents. Those agents enhance the strength of the surface and provide resistance to deteriorating elements like dust, potholes, wash boarding and loose aggregate from traffic and weather.
Road Recycling and Reclamation (Asphalt Pulverization)
To reduce your maintenance costs or upgrade road segments, Horizon North provides reclamation techniques that use existing road surface material to enhance the appropriate space. Soil samples are used to determine the appropriate treatment. After the correct treatment is applied, the road segments can be left as gravel or surfaced with asphalt to complete the maintenance. The reclamation work is typically done between May and October.
Frost Ripping (Top Soil Stripping)
In frost ripping, soil is tilled during the winter months (mid-November to mid-March) to help ease construction and excavation. This is typically undertaken for pipelines and utilities on farmland. Our equipment tills at the desired depth in a single pass through automatic adjustments, leaving a stronger, well-groomed area with a defined separation of soils. This minimizes the chance of mixing your topsoils, subsoils and clays, and help to avoid the loss of soil nutrients that is common with machines that require multiple passes to achieve depths. Our solution reduces your costs in machine hours as well as payments to farmers and land owners for crop production loss.
Agricultural Land Breaking
Horizon North offers a final land breaking procedure when de-forestation of new agricultural land is completed. That procedure annihilates organics in the soil such as roots, small stumps and saplings, leaving the agricultural land ready for seeding more than a year sooner than conventional methods.
