  • Delivering Safe Operations

We strive for a workplace that will enable us to achieve our clear objective of “Achieving and maintaining incident and injury free operations”.

We do this by providing a comprehensive Health, Safety and Environmental Management System that has all the programs and processes to safeguard our employees, our contractors, the many clients that stay within our remote accommodation facilities, and the general public.

At Horizon North, safety is, and always will be of paramount importance in everything we do.

We pursue this through a number of key initiatives including:

We continuously work to improve safety efforts by embedding safety leadership into our culture.  Our leadership, at all levels of the organization, provide visible leadership by engaging with the workers on a daily basis with the focus and purpose of having everyone thinking and behaving in a completely safe way.

We work diligently to ensure roles and responsibilities are effectively executed by ensuring our leadership have the skills and knowledge to effectively coach and mentor their workers.  This is achieved through a persistent emphasis on leadership training.  Safety Essentials for Supervisors and Managers is a three day program designed to increase leader awareness and involvement in safety.   Approximately 450 managers, supervisors and contractors have participated in this mandatory safety training since its inception in 2012.

We use behavior-based systems to proactively reduce “at-risk” behaviors that can result in injury.  Our program is aimed at creating safe work habits by workers and leaders engaging in hazard identification, near-miss reporting, peer to peer observations and leadership observations.

We have a comprehensive Sub-Contractor HSE Management Framework that provides the procedures to evaluate and select contactors.  This framework provides clear expectations for the selection and retention of contractors that follows 4 stages:

  • Pre-Qualification and Selection
  • HSE Assessment Protocol
  • Field Level Assessment
  • Core-Contractor Reviews

Driving is the single most dangerous activity for our Horizon North employees and our contractor employees.  Personnel driving on Horizon North’s behalf must always be vigilant, attentive and patient when transiting Canada’s roadways.

We have a formal driving program that includes defensive driver training, driver abstract reviews every six months, driver observations and, all Horizon vehicles have “Vehicle Information Monitoring Systems” installed.

We are committed to maintaining a safe and productive workplace, promoting an environment that is free from substance abuse and ensuring compliance with any government laws or regulations.  Our Substance Abuse Program is directed at protecting the health and safety of employees, co-workers, contractors and the general public.  The Substance Abuse Program combines drug and alcohol testing with employee education, manager/supervisor training and access to assistance.

For more additional information on other safety programs and processes within Horizon North refer to the booklet “An overview of Horizon North Logistics HSE Program and Processes”.
