About the project
Timeline: May through August 2015
In 2013, Horizon North was awarded the Alberta ESRD fire camps contract and positioned on the call out list. At the beginning of 2015, Alberta ESRD notified us that we would be the preferred provider for the 2015 fire season. By August, Horizon North was operating up to nine camps simultaneously, with 15 camps in total. During the fire camp season, calls typically came in during the evening, or on a weekend, after Alberta ESRD teams have assessed their needs and plans. Horizon North’s on-call team would then initiate a conference call with the relevant team members to determine next steps. The fleet group would determine and plan out the required equipment based on the package Alberta ESRD requests, including kitchens, office packages, wash cars, sleepers and generators, as well as additional support gear and materials. Our in-house transportation division coordinates trucks and drivers to handle the loads and the site works team assigns trades and labor. The hospitality team responded by contacting kitchen and janitorial staff and coordinate the timing for the first hot meal. Staff transportation was arranged with groceries through the Horizon North logistics team and coordinated out of the Edmonton warehouse. The contract required that the first meal be served within 48 hours from the initial request; however, our response for all camps was completed within 24 hours, serving hot meals. Firefighter camps occupancy fluctuated between 70 and 300 over the term of the contract. We served over 100,000 meals during the 2015 fire season and were successful because of our dedicated staff, planning and execution strategy.
