It is with great pride that we announce that Horizon North has been named the recipient of the Gold Level Standing for Canada’s Safest Employers Award within the Hospitality Sector.
Canada’s Safest Employers Award recognizes companies from across Canada who demonstrate outstanding initiatives in the promotion of health and safety of their employees.
Winners of Canada’s Safest Employers Award were chosen by a panel of 14 judges. This award, sponsored by Levitt Safety, was given to the organization with the strongest health and safety culture in the country. The winning company demonstrated a culture that not only permeates the workplace, but extends into the employer’s community, networks and areas of influence to make health and safety a priority for all.
“This award is a true testament to what our team is doing to demonstrate excellence in our journey to zero incidents.” Says Bill Anderson, Executive Vice President, Quality, Health, Safety and Environment. “We are committed to achieving and maintaining standards of excellence in managing all of the Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) aspects of our operations. We believe that this is the basis for reaching our vision of being recognized and valued by industry and the communities in which we operate as best-in-class in HSE performers.”
Horizon North was nominated, and won the gold level standing, because of our comprehensive safety plan and initiatives. Judges reviewed performance in occupational health and safety management system, health and safety committees and review process, hazard/risk assessments, training programs, inspection process, emergency response plans, and employee engagement.
Horizon North constantly monitors and improves our efforts in taking HSE beyond existing requirements and setting new industry standards. We have a simple goal of “achieving and maintaining incident and injury free operations.”
“This award is phenomenal recognition of a decade of dedication and hard work. Five years ago, I had the pleasure of joining a team that had laid the groundwork for a high functioning culture of safety. With that foundation, we have been able to make even more progress and it has been a breathtaking journey. It is extremely gratifying to be part of the transition from a company with awareness and attention to safety to a company that proactively considers safety in everything we do.” stated Jeff Litchfield, Vice President Operations – Camps & Catering, “What I am most thankful for is the opportunity to be part of a team that constantly strives to ensure our people are able to be safe and secure.”
We provide our employees and contractors with clear expectations about safe on-the-job performance and the tools and processes to support a safe operation. Furthermore, we require anyone working with us to learn and understand our policies and procedures, and to abide by them at all times. Our commitment to providing a safe workplace includes an expectation of care and safety, a strict drug and alcohol policy, and continuous training. We will continue to enhance our comprehensive HSE program.
Horizon North’s culture is one of openness that strongly encourages reporting of at-risk behaviors, at-risk conditions and near misses with no discipline attached. This culture is supported by leadership that are expected to manage in an open, unthreatening and respectful manner.
