On Tuesday, October 24th 2017, Andrea Scheelar was awarded the Human Resource Rising Star Award in a ceremony in Toronto, Ontario. This award is given to those individuals who show innovation, drive and an outstanding ability to change organizations.
Andrea joined Horizon North in October 2015, on a 6-month contract to help with the development and implementation of some critical Human Resource programs and processes surrounding total rewards and performance management. Andrea’s in-depth knowledge of human resource programs, ability to engage with customer groups and manage significant projects both strategically and technically, quickly landed Andrea a permanent role on the team.
In 2016, Andrea was critical in leading the development and implementation of Horizon North’s first Human Resource Information System. Before this, employee data beyond the minimum required to pay staff was lacking or hard to find. The project was completed on-time and on-budget and reduced the number of HR forms used from approximately 40 down to 4. This was an enormous step forward for Horizon North.
“Human Resources has worked purposefully to build a leadership team that is committed to providing a consistently high standard of client services, while continuing to look for ways to support the organization and contribute to the success of the business.” stated Marci Cooke, Director Human Resources, “Andrea stepped into a brand-new role early in 2017, and has worked tirelessly to support the HR team through much change since that time. It is wonderful to see her recognized for her contributions to the HR team, and the organization overall. This is an amazing accomplishment.”
This year, Andrea was promoted to Manager, People Services. For the past 12 months, Horizon North has been planning the restructuring of our Human Resources team and service delivery model to provide standard and efficient services to our operations and our people. Andrea was the successful candidate to fill this role and for the past 5 months has been quickly transitioning to a shared services model focused on centralizing policies, aligning processes, launching new programs, and implementing new systems. Andrea has been a fundamental leader in the transition of our HR department, “She has built her team to help support the business partners and work closely with the Center of Excellence to ensure processes, policies and programs are executed consistently and efficiently.” stated Ben Bazinet, Vice President Human Resources.
Andrea was the successful recipient of the Human Resources Rising Star Award because of her determination, business acumen, and analytical approach to Human Resources. “We have some of the best people in our industry on our team. Andrea is a rising star and has achieved a lot in a short time with Horizon North. It is very well deserved.” Says Ben Bazinet. “Employees will continue to see a very professional HR team delivering an exceptional experience to them. And perhaps a few more awards as time goes on.”
The Human Resource team will continue to assess, develop and support HR programs that will help us provide a workplace that is attractive to employment seekers, and modeled by other employers. Our employees should feel proud to be part of an organization that fosters personal development, and encourages innovation in the business.
Andrea was up against nominees from all over the country who are high performing and innovative. The HR Reporter National HR Awards are recognized throughout the HR industry across Canada, so being chosen as a winner is excellent exposure for Andrea and Horizon North. Winning this award requires a combination of experience, initiative and dedication to career progression within HR.
