Marine Services

The Marine Services segment is operated through Horizon Marine Inc. which owns specialized camp/work barges that can be moved close to a work location via the northern waterways to house work crews. The barges and camp/work barges can also be used to facilitate winter projects by loading them with equipment and moving them close to the work location and freezing them in over the winter months to provide a base of operations.  This kind of planning provides an extended winter work season as operators do not have to wait for thick ice to form on the waterways in order to transport equipment to the work site.

Horizon Marine Inc. also operates tugs and barges used for the transportation of fuel and equipment throughout the Beaufort Delta.  The tugs and barges are chartered to customers on a daily rate basis and operate when the waterways are free of ice, which is generally from mid-June to mid-October.

Horizon Marine Inc. also owns or has access to three strategically located staging areas that can be used by customers as operations bases for northern development projects which are located at Tuktoyaktuk, Swimming Point and Lucas Point, all of which are located in the Northwest Territories.  The 100% owned Tuktoyaktuk facility consists of a 280 man base camp, barge landing docks, fuel storage, maintenance shops, and equipment storage areas.  The Swimming Point facility is located on the Mackenzie River between Tuktoyaktuk and Inuvik that consists of an 80 man base camp, barge landing dock, fuel storage, landing strip, maintenance shops and equipment storage areas.  The Lucas Point facility is located a few kilometres south of Swimming Point but on the other side of the Mackenzie River.  The Lucas Point location has no building on it but has 4.6 hectares of graveled storage area and a barge landing dock.  Lucas Point has been used in the past as an equipment storage area.  Lucas Point and Swimming Point are leased by Arctic Oil and Gas Services Inc., a company that is 50% owned by Horizon North with the other 50% owned by the Inuvialuit Development Corporation (the “IDC”).
