On September 28, Horizon North was selected to complete Vancouver’s first temporary modular housing project with the Vancouver Affordable Housing Association and the city of Vancouver. Fast forward a few weeks later to October 22, and dignitaries from all parties were in Vancouver to introduce the Horizon North designed modular show suite.
A group of Horizon North employees, led by Jeff Thomas, Vice President Sales & Marketing, took part in a media event highlighting the Horizon North customized design for the housing project. Also participating in the modular show suite unveiling was Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, and Mr. Mukhtar Latif, CEO of the Vancouver Affordable Housing Agency.
The Vancouver Affordable Housing Association was mandated to create new housing that is more affordable to local residents to address Vancouver’s housing affordability challenges as quickly as possible. The first project, which Horizon North was fortunate to be awarded, is a 14,875 square foot building featuring 40 single occupancy suites with self-contained bathrooms and kitchens, individual climate control, and a private living space. This facility is a concrete first step in providing below market temporary housing to individuals on fixed to low incomes in Vancouver.
This housing project will be manufactured in Horizon North’s world-class Kamloops facility, allowing the project to be completed quicker, with higher quality, and cost certainty when compared to traditional site build construction methods. By utilizing modular construction for these facilities, allows the building to be disassembled in the future and moved to another location at a fraction of the cost, as opposed to constructing a new permanently fixed building.
Horizon North’s talented manufacturing team created the modular show suite that provides the community a firsthand experience of what the affordable housing units will look like. The show suite is featured prominently at Robson Square, a major hub spot in the city of Vancouver, until November 1. Manufacturing of the module units will commence mid-November, with the project slated to be installed and completed by the spring of 2017.
Horizon North’s commitment to this innovative project aligns with our core values; which include community, safety, and integrity. Horizon North is both proud and excited to be able to help the City of Vancouver with solutions for affordable housing in their communities.
“Horizon North is pleased to work with the City of Vancouver and the Vancouver Affordable Housing Agency on their first temporary modular housing project. Our innovative design and manufacturing team has developed a building solution that finds synergy between form and function, in a cost-effective manner. This presentation centre will provide interested parties the opportunity to gain a better understanding of what each single occupancy unit will offer when the building is completed in the spring of 2017,” commented Rod Graham, President and Chief Executive Officer of Horizon North.
